Day 9, Oct. 29, Wed.: Spent all day at Windsor Castle, about 22 mi. north of London. What an experience it was! This is where state visits of foreign dignitaries meet the queen. Large, expansive, very colorful rooms! 30 years ago, when Lynne was here, she met a young girl, Kate, who worked as a maid at the castle. Kate lived onsite and took Lynne on a complete tour of the palace - she went places where visitors arent allowed. She came home with Windsor Castle letterhead that even had the phone number on it! Well, I didnt quite have that experience, but it was wonderful nevertheless. Cheryl and I had our picture taken with one of the guards, and sure enough, they wont talk to you and you cant make them laugh! Headed back to London afterwards where we had a farewell dinner at a restaurant in Covent Gardens. A typical English meal - shepherds pie, which was delicious, chicken liver pate and some sort of chocolate cake for dessert. Got back to our rooms, packed and prepared for an early departure to Heathrow the following morning. I loved this trip and will be forever grateful to Lynne and Chuck for sending me on it. I met so many wonderful people who live here in OKC. Everyone I met or talked to was courteous, friendly and helpful. By the end of the week, I was doing pretty well with the currency; Cheryl never did get the hang of it! My only regret is that I didnt get to really explore London - maybe thats a good thing, though, because it strengthens my resolve to go back there and do and see it all! One last funny story - in London, you have to pay to use a public bathroom. Well, Cheryl and I got in this long line and I counted out our money - we each had the correct amount - 50 pence each. As we left the bathroom, we discovered the machine was broken, and the line of anxious ladies stretched out up the stairs and on to the sidewalk. We evidently were the last ones through the machine and then it broke. I swear, WE DIDNT BREAK IT! My favorite city was Edinburgh. My favorite food was fish & chips (I think I ate it four times). I loved hearing bagpipes on the streets of Edinburgh. I love my collection of rocks! Its been over a week since Ive been home and Im just now recovering from jet lag! What a wonderful experience!
