Day 975. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD ELDRED SEARING 30437. Born in Hoxton, London in May 1899, Edward was the second of five sons to Henry and Letitia Searing of 88 Hartingdon Road, Southend. A Brewery Hand before he joined up, Edward enlisted on 8th June 1917 training at Rugeley and North Shields before shipping to France and joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in camp outside Arras. Pushing up to meet the advancing German Army at Armentieres, the Pals, with their numbers made up of many such men as Edward, young and inexperienced and out of their depth, were driven back with heavy losses on 12th April 1918. Edward was wounded and captured by the Germans. He died of wounds on 25th April and is buried at Lille Southern Cemetery. Edwards elder brother Henry had been killed in action on 27th May 1916 meaning the Searings had to say farewell to the their second son having already lost their first. Both Searing boys are pictured here. Edward is on the left.
