Day three of songs that mean something to me. Opeth took over as my favourite band around 2002, and stayed there for a long time. The daring, dank, grandiose melancholy of Blackwater Park was also the first album to bring me round to screamed, or growled, vocals, a significant leap that a lot of people struggle with and, understandably, never make. Mainly, this album, while made in Sweden, is utterly attuned to British winter, and the lyrics and storytelling are glorious. Bleak is still one of the most epic pieces of music Ive heard, this was the track that hit me square between the eyes. Additionally, learning the lead run at the start, having begun messing around with guitar a year earlier, was one of the moments that made me want to learn a bit about the instrument.
