De NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center Hurricane Gonzalo has strengthened to a major hurricane. Maximum sustained winds are now 115 mph - a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening during the next 48 hours is forecast and Gonzalo is expected to become a Category 4 hurricane on Wednesday. The hurricane is centered as of 5 p.m. EDT/AST over the open Atlantic Ocean about 330 miles east of Grand Turk Island and 770 miles south of Bermuda, moving toward the northwest. On the forecast track, the center of Gonzalo will remain well to the east of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands.
