Dead wood and live wasps The boys found a rotten tree stump in the park. They happened to have a hammer and chisel with them and had great fun chipping away little fragments of wood. I was also able to teach them about the value of dead wood to woodlands. However, after about 30 minutes the field trip ended abruptly when I noticed quite a few wasps emerging from the hollow no doubt irritated with all the banging on their refuge!
