Dean Bedeau Courts OECS Reading Champion 2013 Thursday 31st October marked the culmination of the highly anticipated 2013 5th Annual Courts OECS Reading Competition in host country and 2012’s Champion St. Lucia. Since its inception in 2009 this competition has grown tremendously and continues to be overtly received with the highest of acclamations throughout the entire sub-region. Present at last Thursday’s auspicious preceding were Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Minister for Education Human Resource Development and Labour Hon. Doctor Robert Lewis, Unicomer OECS Managing Director Mr Derek Luk Pat, Directors and Staff of Unicomer OECS, proud partners, ministry officials, principals, teachers and students from primary schools across OECS. Proudly representing their respective islands, finalists Jamika Nedd from Antigua, Shanda Francis from Dominica, Dean Bedeau from Grenada, Asharie Monica Wrensford from St. Kitts, Petra Robinson from St. Lucia, and Krysten Barbour from St. Vincent each vied for a chance at winning the coveted title – Courts OECS Reading Champion 2013 - as they confidently delivered both pieces one by one before the judging panel. “This year’s competition was regarded as the most closely contested one to date, each child had a clear understanding of the judging criteria and delivered their pieces remarkably well” says chief judge – Mrs Denyse Brathwaite. At the end of a keenly contested competition, Grenada’s Dean Bedeau was crowned the Courts OECS Reading Champion 2013 making it the Spice Isle island‘s second win. Dean is also the first boy to win this competition since its inception in 2009, Asharie Wrensford from St. Kitts captured second place and Dominica’s Shanda Francis placed 3rd. The participants’ outstanding efforts were rewarded with an array of prizes as they each received their certificates of participation, engraved trophies sponsored by The Trophy Centre and laptops compliments Courts. Additionally, the winner was awarded $5000 as well as his local school - Bonair Government - in Grenada received $5000. Second and third place winners, Asharie Wrensford and Shanda Francis received $3000 and $2000 respectively as well as Jamika Nedd, Petra Robinson and Krysten Barbour each received $1000 in cash. Digicel presented a Samsung Galaxy Tablet and accessories as well as a plaque to the most outstanding reader – Dean Bedeau.
