Dear 2-Handed People, Please dont do random acts of helpfulness for people you assume need your help. Ask questions like, How can I help you?, if you REALLY believe someone needs help. But for the love of Orphan Annie, dont just reach out & do things for people out of the blue. In my experience, what looks like struggling to you, is me living my life with one hand. And a lot of times I dont even look like Im struggling. Check yourself to see if your helpfulness comes from your assumption about what someone else cant do. Im a trooper, no doubt. AND it gets tiresome when people look at you & think you cant.... (fill in the blank). People randomly do all kinds of things for me, but really, theyre doing it for themselves. For example, I just ordered from Subway. The cashier reached to get me a straw, though the straws were way closer to me than to her. Then, instead of handing me the straw, she started to put it in my cup for me. Then, she realized the plastic was still on the straw, so she started to take it off. This is when I stopped her. All of this happened in about 3 seconds. But these kinds of things happen way too often. Before you ridicule this cashier, stop. Stop because I BET youve randomly helped people because you assumed they couldnt do things. One reason I have one hand is to own the responsibility of telling yall that youre deceiving yourselves when you say youre being helpful, a lot of times. Often, youre helping yourselves feel better about how it made you feel after youve seen someone who you assume cant. I know yall dont mean any harm. But I have to call yall on it, or else...how would yall really know the impact you have? So just think about what your helpfulness is in response to, & then honor when people tell you, No. Sincerely, Trying Not to Punch Society in the Throat
