Dear Abby, How do I start a conversation with the girl I like? Dear Submitter, The inevitable question of high school - girls. Girls are so awesome; they smell good, they look pretty, and they are overall very appealing. Everybody wants one. I don’t want to say – “start with hello and just be yourself” – clichés like this are said often, and mean so little without a clear description. But there are some ideas in there worth knowing. Based on the fact that you are asking an ICS page, I will assume that the girl you like goes to our school. That is a distinct advantage. Same school, same peers, same teachers, and (if you are in the same grade) same assignments. Any connection is a world of things to talk about. “What did you think of the Bio Showcase? – This unit was hard for mw,” or “I know you’ve been having a little trouble in Physics – if you ever need help, just ask,” are some of the best conversation starters. It’s not only a way to start a conversation that isn’t “uh hi uh kay you’re so pretty bye” (trust me, I’ve had too many of those), but it lends a fallback if you can’t think of anything to say. A compliment is also so easy. I have never had a guy tell me something nice that I didn’t like. It’s also a good way to subtly say you think they’re pretty. “You look pretty today” probably means, “I think you look pretty a lot more days.” Just “I like your hair like that” can even make her day, and associate a better day with you. This may or may not lead to conversation – but it’s still good. Be brave – start the conversation and try to be confident. (She might like you, too, you know!) Talk about something you have in common, throw in a compliment, and remember some fallback topics to avoid awkward silence. Now you’re talking to her. Gauge her emotions, learn what she likes to talk about, and talk to her some more. Suggest getting together with friends sometime – and then do it! Be her friend.
