Dear Advocates for Humanity, When I founded Changing Mississippi - TopicsExpress

Dear Advocates for Humanity, When I founded Changing Mississippi it was my goal to inspire, motivate, and lead a group of Mississippi Citizens to help bring Light into the sweltering Darkness of Mississippi. I knew that change would not come over night. I knew this from the very beginning. It wasn’t about immediate satisfaction and change. It was about taking the first steps and standing up for what we believe in, even when we are standing alone. Together, with Changing Mississippi, we could start changing the attitudes, not the minds of Mississippi residents, and maybe, one day, we could call be free to marry the person we love and live happily in debt together…. That day will come, but at this time, it cannot come with me at the helm of this movement. At this point in my life as an advocate, activist, gay male, voter, taxpayer, friend, and son, I am in no place to lead someone else. I learned at a young age, the hard way, that as leaders, we have authority over absolutely no one, but a responsibility to absolutely everyone. It is my responsibility to step away from something that I cannot contribute to wisely, logically, and with worth. My resignation from Changing Mississippi and the immediate disbanding of this group, I hope will stand as some timid form of courage. I hope to see equality and love and humanity flooding every corner of this state, country, and globe. I believe I will see it in my lifetime and a lot sooner than we all think. However, tonight with a heavy heart I knew that I must focus my energy on my inner-self. After all, how can one change the world, when he’s having trouble changing himself? All funds still available were donated to the Human Rights Campaign. I do hope that you all will continue to fight for Equality through the HRC, Equality Mississippi, and GetEqual. I will be available for consulting for said organizations when needed, but my focus is, unfortunately, elsewhere at the moment. In closing, I hope that each of us knows when something serves us well and we in turn serve it well. And when we realize that we can no longer serve it, we have the courage to walk away.
