Dear All, ( Everybody is requested to share/disseminate this ‘Security Advisory’) Please be informed that again, a group of people are involved in mugging in the city, especially young girls and boys in Gulshan, Dhanmondi, Uttara and Banani areas. Using a WHITE CAR, they sometimes abduct young girls and boys, and snatch away valuables from them before they are released. Sometimes, they keep the girls confined and release them later in exchange for ransom from the victims’ families. Besides, the group is actively involved in mugging diplomatic areas (Gulshan 1 North, Gulshan 2, Baridhara, Banani Model Town) targeting expatriates. The group used to monitor movements of expatriates, use a WHITE CAR and rob belongings threatening them with arms/sharp knife. Background – Outlook In our observation, the group has been active in the diplomatic enclave for last three years and is involved with quite a number of mugging incidents. Sometimes, they remain dormant and sometimes keep them visible. In October 2011, Police nabbed the leader from Dohar, outskirt of the capital. Thereafter, on the basis of information revealed during preliminary interrogation, police also recovered the “White Car” used during mugging from Feni district. The leader informed police, the used to target expatriates in order to get handsome amount of foreign currency, expensive cell phones and other valuables without any risk. Reportedly, the law enforcement agencies are “completely unaware and clueless” about recent much-talked-about muggings committed by a gang of criminals using number plate-less Premio and Allion cars in the city’s upscale areas. This indicates the high vulnerability especially to personal security. Security Advisory Until further improvement of the overall situations, please take extra precautionary measures while you are on the road and coming to the office and going back to home. Female colleagues are encouraged not to travel alone as much as possible. However, we would advise you to consider the followings: § Avoid Rickshaws when traveling especially after sunset § Limit walking after dark § Don’t carry valuables in your hand bags and maintain low profile § Be aware of your surroundings at all times § Use common sense § Avoid repetitive routes as far as possible (criminals do collect information, surveillance etc) § Don’t resist any snatching attempt as your life is invaluable We are monitoring the overall situations. If you know any incidents happened recently, please share with us. Your inputs will be helpful in developing an advisory/guideline/strategy to minimize the potential risks. In fact, they (gang) rapidly change their method of mugging, burglary etc. If we know all possible methods it would be an advantage!
