Dear All, I have just voted in support of the governments - TopicsExpress

Dear All, I have just voted in support of the governments motion. This means the RAF will be able to attack ISIL targets in Iraq. I appreciate this will not please everyone but I will briefly attempt to explain why, on balance, I think it is the right thing to do: 1/ Let us have no illusions over what ISIL are. They are a brutal, racist, nihilistic group that have taken fundamentalism to a new dreadful level. Their creed is very simple - support us or be killed! Sadly we have already seen that with the shocking treatment of many of the Yazedis, Kurds, Christians or Shia Muslims who refused to convert, or even the dreadful images of their treatment of the western hostages. I simply do not believe we can ignore this group or their behaviour. The chaos that is Iraq - for reasons we all know - mean that without intervention who knows where their ruthless land and people conquest would have stopped? 2/ The motion emphasises there will not be British ground troops involved and that were any action be taken in Syria, it would have to come back to the House for another vote. 3/ Our intervention is legal under international law as we have been invited by the democratically elected Iraqi government. In other words we are not attacking Iraq but defending it against a shockingly brutal aggressor. 4/ We are in coalition not just with other Western allies but other Sunni Arab States in the Region. 5/ I have received assurances that our humanitarian efforts will be re-doubled. These are the main reasons why I am persuaded. It was not an easy decision and I wholly respect that there will be some Eastbourne folk who totally disagree with me. However, there are times you have to do what you think is right for our country even if its hard: and this is one of them. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to read this post. Regards, SL
