Dear Buffalo Nite Committee, I nominate H. David Jay, better - TopicsExpress

Dear Buffalo Nite Committee, I nominate H. David Jay, better known as Uncle Dave for the Charging Buffalo Award. He meets the exact criteria in which the Charging Buffalo Award describes. David was born Harold David Jay in Hollywood, CA in 1939, and relocated to Buffalo, NY at the age of 5 months. He attended PS 4, PS 81, and graduated from Bennet High School. He played baseball during his teenage years and his mates nicknamed him Duke! After High School, he attended Pratt University in NYC where he played baseball and studied architecture. In 1961, David was drafted into the US Army, in which he is very proud of to this day. He was stationed at Ft. Belvoir in 1963, and has remained in the DC area ever since. David is a career architect, and still practices his trade today. He has helped plan hundreds of buildings throughout the DMV area, including schools, restaurants, office buildings and more. He is currently one of the lead architects working on the Expansion Project at Jimmys Old Town Tavern, and was our original architect when we opened our doors in 1996. David has refereed area soccer leagues, and spent 25 years as a youth baseball coach with the Babe Ruth League. After years of coaching, David ultimately became the Commissioner of the League. David was a Sunday regular during Buffalo Bills games for many seasons at Greveys Restaurant during the Super Bowl days! He was known to arrive early and save a large table in which many of his fellow fans would join him at. He was an icon at Greveys during those days. He became a close friend to all of us at Jimmys Old Town Tavern from Day One back in 1996, and has the claim to fame of being the 1st Ever Bills fan to walk in the door! He quickly acquired the nick name, Uncle Dave, by myself, our staff, and our patrons. He has always volunteered his services at Jimmys as a bartender and a host, and still works a double shift every Friday to help us through our Fish Fry night! He is well known during Bills and Sabres games for decorating the entire restaurant with Buffalo souvenirs, passing out Sponge Candy, and hosting his own table. In fact, he is the only one we ever hold a table for during a game! David has been a strong supporter of Buffalo Nite in DC, in which he assists with the operation of the Jimmys Old Town Tavern booth. Hundreds of Buffalo Nite attendees are drawn to our booth solely to say hi to Uncle Dave and to participate in one of his original WNY based games! Uncle Dave became very popular in the local restaurant scene as the Eldest Bartender Ever to enter the DCs Fastest Bartender Contest, in which he personally raised $10,000.00 for the Make A Wish Foundation by auctioning off his margarita the night of the finals. This was the largest (and still is) amount ever raised through the contest, which thrived throughout not only the DC area, but up and down the East Coast since 1984. After years of supporting the contest and helping raise money for the many charities that the contest supported, Uncle Dave became the Official Scorekeeper in which he volunteered his services for over a decade. An Award was created in Uncle Daves Honor and is given to the restaurants that raise the highest amount for charity, it is called the H. David Jay Award and is presented as a plaque. There are several restaurants that proudly display this award on their walls. Jimmys is one of them! Uncle Dave is an avid fan of his hometown sports teams, and together we try to attend at least one home Bills game and one home Sabres game each year. It is not uncommon to hear strangers at Ralph Wilson Stadium or 1st Niagara Arena shout Hey Uncle Dave!! from across the hallway, or to have local bartenders/owners greet him like an old friend. He jumped on the NY Yankees bandwagon during his college years, and until Buffalo has an MLB team, he will remain on that bandwagon. Uncle Dave is 74 years old and resides in Ashburn VA. He works in his home based studio, visits Jimmys regularly, and enjoys time with his 3 sons and their families. He survives his beautiful wife, Ann Marie, who passed away several years ago. I believe there is no better person in the DC area that signifies what the Charging Buffalo Award represents. He is a true and blue Buffalonian, he resides in the DC area, he is a celebrity in his own right, and is a genuine Ambassador of All Things Buffalo! I appreciate your time in reading this letter. Please contact me for any information you may need. And if this is not his year, please keep this letter a secret as I will update it next year and resubmit! Thank you!
