Dear Chico Arts Community, We regret to inform you that the City Council has decided to cut the Arts Commission back to the point of essentially making ourselves obsolete. The end result of the meeting was a motion by Fillmer that passed 4-3 stating that the Arts Commission be reduced to two meetings per year with the express purpose of strategizing a way to be completely self-reliant. Essentially, the Commissioners have been tasked with figuring out how to eliminate the Arts Commission on behalf of the Council. We have a lot to say about that, but will reserve our own personal comments at this time. We appreciate the support of Council-members Ritter, Stone and Schwab in their attempts to find a reasonable solution to keep the Commission in tact and functioning. Unfortunately, the other Council-members seem to hold less regard for the value of our Commission and what the Arts mean to the City of Chico and to the well-being of our community. We each know that the Arts in this Community are incredibly important to the quality of life that we all enjoy here, and were very disappointed with the outcome of this meeting. The members of the Chico Arts Commission want to thank all of you who supported us in our efforts to maintain a level of City support that would allow us to function as a viable Commission. Your stories, support and testimony tonight were valuable to us in many ways. We greatly appreciate your support.
