Dear City-Dwelling Dog Owners, I hope you will consider how your choice to allow your dog to run free influences others. Especially those of us with small children and leashed dogs of our own. I understand your wish for your dog to run free. But, allowing your dog to run off leash is not fair to me and my family, who are inconvenienced at best and terrorized or injured at worst. While our pets are valued members of our family, they are also animals. And as such, their behavior simply can not be predicted in any and all circumstances. Having been cornered in two separate incidents by off-leash dogs in the past three years, my heart goes into my throat when I see a dog running loose while Im out walking with my family. Those incidents have literally paralyzed me; I am no longer able to walk or bike in my neighborhood due to the unpredictability of loose dogs in the area and the terror that I feel when I see one. Yesterday on our walk in the nature preserve, out of 8 people with dogs, only 2 of us had ours on a leash. Every time, while their dogs ran free, we had to scoop up our toddler, contain our leashed dog as the other loose one ran circles around her and us. Please consider a leash. Its safer for your dog, its safer for your community and other animals, and in most cities it is against ordinance not to have your dog on one. My formerly racing Greyhound is pleased as a peach to be on one. If shes happy on one, surely almost any dog can be. And if not, I question whether your dog should be kept in the city at all. Sincerely, Fellow Dog-Owner, Human, Mother, Community Member
