Dear Clients and pet owners, We frequently get older female - TopicsExpress

Dear Clients and pet owners, We frequently get older female dogs into the clinic that have never been spayed. When questioned the general response is that the dog has never been around male dogs and so the owner didnt feel it was necessary to invest the money to have the dog spayed or they had wanted to breed the dog and never had found a male or they had been told that the dog was too small. I understand all of these reasons but there are some very valid reasons to have your female dog spayed even if she is never around male dogs. The pictures below are of a pyometra, a uterus full of pus. This is from an 8 yo mixed breed dog that had spent her whole life in the back yard with a neutered male and therefore the owners had never had her spayed. As the female dogs get older the uterus, like everything else, gets weaker. When the female goes into heat, whether she is exposed to a male or not, there is bacteria and such that gets through the open cervix and into the uterus. A young healthy uterus will clear the invaders but an old, weakened uterus cannot and it results in the bacteria setting up shop and causing a pyometra. THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING CONDITION!!. It will not resolve on its own. It will NOT go away with just antibiotics. It will kill your dog. I know that it is difficult sometimes to be able to afford the spay but a routine spay is significantly cheaper than trying to save your dog that has a pyometra. Not only will you be preventing pyometra but you will also be significantly reducing your dogs chances of developing mammary cancer. If you are taking on the responsibility of owning a pet than you are choosing to take responsibility to care for it. There are expenses that come with that in vaccinating and spaying or neutering. As I have said previously, if you cant afford basic preventive care for your pet, you cant afford to own one. Please spay your females for their care and protection against life threatening conditions.
