Dear Colleagues, On 1 May 2012, the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 received Royal Assent and became an Act of Parliament. The Act restricts the deletion of DNA and fingerprints and gives added protection to innocent people whose DNA has been retained. Under the Act, DNA and fingerprints will only be retained indefinitely where an individual has been convicted of an offence. Broadly equivalent limits on retention will also apply to DNA and fingerprints taken under counter-terrorism legislation.
