Dear Community Partner, As the Grand Jury in Ferguson, MO - TopicsExpress

Dear Community Partner, As the Grand Jury in Ferguson, MO prepares to issue its ruling, everyone across the country is watching with interest and anticipation. Much like the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, it is clear that no matter which way the ruling falls, there will be people upset and others who may be celebratory. Objectively, there is no loss of life that should result in celebration, but this is an emotionally charged situation where objectivity yields to strong personal reactions. In the U.S., where we cherish free speech among our many freedoms, we all must be prepared for strong reactions following the Grand Jury decision. As community leaders, this is the kind of scenario when our leadership can be challenged. We, at the Greenville Police Department, are prepared to protect the free speech rights of all persons, no matter what side of the issue they may fall on. We ask for your assistance in helping us keep our community safe, including the safety of those who may be called to protest or express emotions ranging from outrage to relief over the Grand Jury decision. Our goal is to work proactively with all gatherings to facilitate their right to assemble and show expression in a constitutionally protected manner, while simultaneously ensuring the safety of the community. We ask that you provide your influence, as a community leader, to show support for responsible and civil public expressions, as well as to help us connect effectively with citizens who may need dialogue with the police over any aspect of the Grand Jury decision. While this event occurred far from our community, we nevertheless understand the importance of answering questions and showing transparency with our own citizens who may have questions or concerns locally. If you have any input or suggestions, we welcome your feedback; please feel free to contact your Zone Commanders directly, or you can contact the Office of the Chief of Police as well. Thank you in advance for your leadership and support. Sincerely, Hassan Aden Chief of Police (252)329-4333
