Dear Division K Colleagues, Your support is desperately needed! Please read on. First, our event “Out in the Community” is seriously under-subscribed (17 registrants to date versus 150 planned). Please consider attending. Just think…$10 gets you round trip transportation and a glass of wine—not to mention student performances, talks with local education organizations, and the opportunity to hear Superintendent William Hite speak about the Philadelphia Schools. Second, Philadelphia schools and educators are seriously under-subscribed. They need you to hear their stories, understand their context, think of ways you can support them and urban, PUBLIC, school districts all over the country who find themselves fighting for their lives. I know the Philadelphia Education Fund, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Parents United for Public Education, and the After School Activities Partnership would love to tell you about their work. Clearly, we need you (and your Division K/AERA friends—bring them too). Details about the event follow below. Let me and Dean Lynch of the School of Education at Drexel buy you a drink at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Lin + + + + On Wednesday April 2, 3:30–5:30 pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Division K and Drexel University School of Education will co-host, “Out in the Community: Conversations with Students, Educators and School Leaders in Philadelphia.” This off-site session offers Division K members an opportunity to look at schooling, reform and innovation through the eyes and experiences of school leaders and educators on the ground in Philadelphia. We are so pleased that Superintendent William Hite has graciously agreed to join us; we look forward to learning about his work and his vision for the Philadelphia schools. Another highlight of this session will be student literary performances, as well as the opportunity to explore the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere. A reception will follow the program. 3:30-4:15 Academy of Natural Sciences (Museum) exploration 4:15-5:30 Formal programming featuring: Philadelphia Schools Superintendent Dr. William Hite Panel discussion with various education organizations including the Philadelphia Education Fund, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Parents United for Public Education, and the After School Activities Partnership. Also included are student literary performances 5:30-7:00 Reception (includes 1 drink ticket) and continued opportunity to dialogue with education organization reps To register, select the “Events” tab, and then look for session #OSV5.
