Dear ESPN, Hi. Just wanted to let you know that we get it. We get that you have the contract for the NBA and youre going to shove it down our throats whether or not we like it (most of us dont). It seems a little absurd to dedicate 3/4 of your hourly flagship program to coverage of the NBA playoffs. Again, were talking about the fourth most popular sports league in America. Please keep in mind that a non-athletic event tied to the countrys most popular league (NFL Draft) did nearly 3 times better in ratings than the best ratings for any of your NBA playoffs games. The pain of ESPN forcing bad NBA basketball down our throats is more acute in western Pa. Most of my 756 Facebook friends are from western Pa. Would all 3 of you who care about the NBA raise your hands, please? Seriously, local media could go weeks without NBA coverage and no one would notice (trust me, we did it at the Tribune-Democrat in the early 2000s - when people still read actual newspapers - and not one reader complained). What tells me the NBA is in some trouble is that even with the full force of Bristol behind it, the Association hasnt gained momentum. ESPN tells us what we do and dont like in sports. NFL aside, it dictates what the sports leagues can and cant do. It is THE sports hype machine. At times during the past two months I was wondering if it was doubling as Johnny Manziels agent. Bargain with us, will ya? How about toning it down to just 30 minutes of overplayed coverage of the NBA playoffs no one cares about? Seriously, I find myself begging for golf highlights or an interview with a NASCAR driver ....
