Dear Editor, My name is Mr Lee, and I am a bus captain. I came - TopicsExpress

Dear Editor, My name is Mr Lee, and I am a bus captain. I came across an article (Who Says Unions Have No Teeth?), and that reminded me of a closed door meeting our union had with the NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say. When we say ‘closed-door’, it means that it’s just Minister Lim and us, the workers; no one from the management or HR side can be in the room. Anyway, we discussed about that makes a powerful union, and how to remain powerful. We also spoke about tripartite relations, and even quadripartite relations (Workers, Employers, Government and Customers!) During the session, what left me with the deepest impression was when Minister Lim shared with us something that an American Industrial Relations expert had said. The expert had said a truly powerful union does not need to go on strike. Real influence is when a union is able to fight for workers’ rights and welfare without resorting to strikes. Strikes are for weak unions that companies won’t even listen to. I’ve asked my son to upload a video that I’d taken during the closed-door session, and I hope to be able to share with more people. https://facebook/video.php?v=370862476407754
