Dear English Majors and Minors: As Chair of the English - TopicsExpress

Dear English Majors and Minors: As Chair of the English Department, I wanted to take a moment to welcome you back to the classroom. I’m excited to be back on campus, and I hope you are too. Here are few things to keep in mind as the semester gets started: 1) Remember, the English Department is now on Facebook! We’ll be using our page to publicize events, announce faculty publications, keep in touch with alums, and perhaps even collect stray reading suggestions. Keep in the loop by “liking” us at facebook/SkidmoreEnglish and please let others know who might be interested, particularly alums. You’ll find there pictures from last May’s graduation party. 2) Seniors, if you’re currently in a Senior Seminar or are working on a Thesis or Senior Project, and you intend to qualify for Honors, you need to complete the “Declaration to Qualify for Honors,” available in the English department office, and at the following link: cms.skidmore.edu/english/forms.cfm 3) Our Associate Chair is Barbara Black. She’s responsible for all study-abroad and transfer-credit signatures. 4) Student representatives to the department for the year are Joshua Speers (`14), Sarah Benson (`14), Jon Lemay (`15), Halley Furlong-Mitchell (`15, Fall), and Rebecca Workman (`15, Spring). They will be attending department meetings each month, and would love to hear from you about any concerns or suggestions you may have. 5) As usual, we have a number of exciting events this semester. The Fox-Adler lecture, featuring Isaac Gewirtz, will take place at 5:15 on September 19 in Gannett, and poet Alex Dimitrov will read at 6:30 on September 23 in the Surrey. Jonathan Franzen will present the Steloff lecture on October 3 at 8:00 in Gannett, and Phil Boshoff and Martha Wiseman will pose the question “Why Grammar?” on October 15 at 5:30 in the library’s Pohndorff Room. Our Literary Studies Symposium returns on October 24 at 8:00 in the Surrey and will feature Scott Enderle, Rachael Nichols, and Sarah Wright, and we’re cohosting with Northshire Books an evening with Richard Russo on October 26 at 7:00 in Filene. Finally, I’m very excited to announce that our new fiction hire, Sonya Chung, will give a reading on November 20, 8:00, in Davis. Check the department’s webpage (and Facebook) for updates and reminders. 6) The Skidmore News is always looking for writers and editors. They’re interested not only in journalists and reporters, but in fiction and poetry writers, too. 7) Finally, please let me know about your achievements this year. Many of you are being published, going to conferences, getting into graduate school, and being recognized for your accomplishments. I’d like to share the good news with the department. Feel free to get in touch if you have concerns or questions about anything, and best wishes for the new semester! Mason Stokes
