Dear Families and Friends of TRUMAN, Sept. 14 is Ombudsman - TopicsExpress

Dear Families and Friends of TRUMAN, Sept. 14 is Ombudsman Appreciation Day and while we appreciate our ombudsmen every day, I want to take a second today and recognize ours. Suzanne, Amber, Jessie and Gina -- on behalf of Team TRUMAN and all our families, I want to say thank you. We’re able to do what we do out here because we know that you’re back in Norfolk, looking after our families, communicating with them on a daily basis, and making sure they know they’re not alone. You are an integral part of our TRUMAN family. From the early stages in our training cycle to all the workups off the Atlantic Coast and now while we’re currently deployed, their service as advisors on available sources of assistance have benefitted our families and us in countless ways. Again, we thank you for your daily dedication to ensuring family readiness, which directly impacts our overall mission readiness. I am confident that Team TRUMAN will continue to succeed as our ombudsmen continue to serve as advocates for our families and crewmembers. Out here in the 5th Fleet, your Sailors and Marines are doing an amazing job, as they always do. The crew has been directly supporting our fellow war fighters from Carrier Air Wing 3, launching and recovering aircraft as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The view of the flight deck from the bridge is truly breathtaking as your Sailors and Marines make such demanding work look easy. We’ve conducted several replenishments at sea, which require sharp focus throughout the evolutions. The teamwork that occurs enables us to get fuel for the aircraft, parts and material for the various departments, and food and mail for the crew. And down below, your Sailors and Marines are doing it all, from conducting maintenance in the plants or auxiliary equipment to preparing meals for thousands of their shipmates. The work days are long, but we’ve gotten into our battle rhythm, which helps all elements of shipboard life to function smoothly together. And behind it all are your Sailors and Marines, dedicated to the mission and working as a team. Although we’re still in the earlier part of deployment, your Sailors and Marines have already accomplished tremendous achievements. We held recently had an all hands call on the flight deck that gave us an opportunity to recognize their accomplishments. We named our Sailor of the Quarter, Petty Officer of Quarter, Junior Sailor of the Quarter and Bluejacket of the Quarter. We also pinned 24 Sailors as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists and 14 as Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialists. Members of the deck team were given Navy Achievement Medals or Flag Letters of Commendation from our strike group commander, Rear Admiral Sweeney. The deck team consisted of motivated Sailors from various departments who refurbished many of our decks, saving a significant amount of money and preparing this great ship for deployment. Also, many of your Sailors have been taking the Navy-wide advancement exams. We have one more week to go with the 3rd Class Petty Officer exam scheduled for next Thursday. We wish everyone the best of luck. On Sunday, we’ll officially welcome 51 new chief petty officers to the CPO Mess. Congratulations to all on achieving these important milestones! Thank you very much for all that you do back home while we’re deployed. We are extremely grateful for your sacrifices and your strength in our absence. Although we’re miles apart, your love and support still reach us and provide us comfort and motivation. Sincerely, Bob CAPT S. Robert Roth, USN Commanding Officer USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75)
