Dear Farmington, , As of today May 27th, Ron Zessin, spoke with Russell at 8:17am and stated that the American Legion is serving Robert Emery Chocolate with a 10 day notice. It is with deepest regret that we are CONSIDERING closing our business. It has only been a short 6 months we understand. However, with the lack of business and funds (as we have put all of our money in to the building with nothing in return from the American Legion) has been a tremendous strain on us emotionally and financially. And, per Glen Doubets words in a board meeting with him and other legion members a month ago, ....go peddle your goods somewhere else.....: we are considering doing so. However, let us clear up a few things first. We have had people come directly to us recently saying they have heard that we are not paying our rent. First, this is not true. When we acquired the space on December 16th, 2013 we received 3 months free rent. This would make rent commencement to begin March 16th, 2014. Not realizing the magnitude of work that had to be put in to the building.....new wiring, new walls, new ceilings, new floors, new plumbing (specifically a nightmare of a bathroom) we went to a few Legion Board Members and asked if we could get an extension on the lease as our pockets were running dry. After many battles (see above comment first paragraph ) and meetings with the board it was decided that all future meetings would be held between one individual from the Legion and Russell & I. So, the new lease was to begin May 16th, 2014 with a slight increase. Now, the good part is that the rent is not expensive, considerably speaking. The bad part is there is no business. Why not take out a loan you ask? Well, having done this many times over the past 20 years in various cities with multiple businesses, we absolutely refuse. Why didnt those businesses work you ask? Well, a combination of things LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION and a very poor economy....not much different than Farmington unfortunately. But, this is my hometown and I want to see it flourish....I/we really do. This post is not being written to condemn Farmington....it is being written to shed light on what is really happening and stop all the hearsay. It is also not being written to seek compassion...it is being written because these are the cold hard FACTS. Russel and I spoke for many hours last night about what to do. Ultimately we would like to stay BUT, we have dumped every penny (with which we brought to Farmington) in to a building we RENT NOT OWN. There has been no help from the Legion except for one individual. Their entire building too, we know, is in MAJOR MAJOR need of repairs (as are many in this town of which we are aware). However, we do not feel it is our responsibility to improve/upgrade their space but yet we have done so repeatedly. This type of post would not be our normal reaction as we try to be as professional as possible and not air our dirty laundry but when you feel defeated you must defend yourself. ONCE AGAIN, this post is not a cry for help nor is it a plea for the town to come support us (we know how difficult money is). However, it is to make certain individuals aware that if this town is going to GROW AND SURVIVE....which it is not going to be easy, we all need to work TOGETHER without the bitterness and animosity. We are HOPING to stay and doing everything in our power to stay. We thank all of those who continue to support us. Best, Rob Davis and Russell Walsh Robert Emery Chocolate
