Dear Friend, Not too long ago, I wrote in this same page that the Baby-Boomers were the generation that benefited the most from the economic growth of the US after WWII producing the largest middle class ever created in any nation. Octavio Paz said once “nobody, ever, made so much for so many”. That same generation, however, is now driving our economy down, our country down in pursue of nothing but greed. The neoliberal model failed us all. My friend Carlos wrote the letter you will read next. I asked him for his permission to reproduce it and here it is. I hope you agree with us. Thanks, Manuel - - - - - - - Dear Friend: I, as many, many people in the US, am increasingly concerned about what appears to be the failures of our country as it has seemingly lost its way. I obtained my citizenship in 1954 by virtue of my Army service in Korea. At the time I envisioned the continuation of what to me was such as special place in the world. The freedom that has been part of my life, led to what I have come to realize is an extraordinarily privileged life – not in money – but in the opportunity be who I am and contribute to my community. That privileged life is the subject of a chronicle that I am preparing. I am calling this narrative “My Magic Rope”. It appears that every time I seem to be close to the end of my rope – it extends!! Each time that I dare to jump of the cliff and begin to fall, wings sprout, and the thermals carry me to even better plateaus. The freedom that I experience – without an influential or wealthy family – makes me realize that it is because of my life in the US that I am the beneficiary of so many privileges. In recent years, I have become increasingly concerned as I see that the benefits that have accrued to me, are less and less accessible to many millions. It is not only the “poor” but also folks who have been contributors to their communities – economically, socially and environmentally – are finding themselves with less and less hope. Two books that I have read recently are of particular interest and I urge you to, at least, peruse them. They are available at the Tucson library so that no investment is necessary. I hope that you follow my suggestion and perhaps, if enough of us become aware of what is going on, then cumulatively, we might rise to the occasion. Warmest regards, Carlos NICHOLS, John and Dollarocracy MCCHESNEY, Robert W. This latest devolution of democracy is different from the fits and starts of the past; it goes further in replacing the authority of the vote with the authority of the dollar. It is more sweeping and more cynical. And I have been uncharacteristically successful, preventing a reform movement for the better part of four decades, longer than any stretch in American history. As a result the American experiment now teeters at the precipice between democracy and Dollarocracy. GREENWALD, Glenn With Liberty and Justice for SOME Greenwald provides a broad perspective of how the “rule of Law” is selectively applied in the US. Many examples of blatant violations of, not only US, but also international law are clearly documented. It is not only economic disparity that is affecting our country. This book is an eye-opener for unjust activities that are vaguely perceived but seldom documented.
