Dear Friends: As you no doubt have read in our local papers of the recent murders in two Pietermaritzburg suburbs as well as our report on suspicious characters going from house to house in the Stuart Road area then it brings to the fore just how vigilant and alert we must be, irrespective of where we live. Crime can strike anywhere and at any time wherever you live in an affluent, middle or lower income area, a secure complex, block of flats or just a house, it makes no difference. So what must we do? Just a few simple tips without getting into the high tech or advance home defence systems: Always keep security gates locked Always indicate to strangers or unknown visitors that there are other persons with you at home even if you are alone. Always ask certain visitors (meter readers etc.) for proof of their identity before opening gates or doors. Always secure your valuables. Leaving bicycles and other expensive items lying around or in plain view of passer-by’s is an invite for them to get into your premises Always keep emergency numbers in an easy accessible place Always report suspicious behaviour to the SAPS, Safe City, Neighbourhood Watch or private security provider Always be careful as to who you allow onto premises. Use building contractors or domestic servants with a traceable reference or from a recommended source Always trust your instinct- If it doesn’t look or feel right then it is not right If you live in a house then a pair of big dogs can serve as a very effective deterrent Kind Regards Lucas.
