Dear Friends, I have transitioned from writing my Senate - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends, I have transitioned from writing my Senate newsletter to writing an NC Voter ID Project status update. There will be some overlap as I psychologically transition from being a legislator to John (or Joan) Q. Citizen. I am excited by the overwhelming response to the NC Voter ID project. 1300 people have asked how they can help to make sure every person has the proper ID to vote under the requirements of the new voting law and many more have indicated here that they are willing to help.. 26% of the voters are independent (unaffiliated) and do not have a loyalty to either the Democratic or Republican party. They just want good government. My own granddaughter, who is a student at NCSU this year, rejected my suggestion that she join the Young Democrats to work in the election, instead saying she votes for the person whose values she finds best reflects hers. She is indicative of many young people’s attitudes and we must work to prove our ability to work for good government. We are just beginning to develop an organization to involve all the people who have contacted me or indicated their interest. People have offered their services for project management, data base building, web-site construction and the key boots on the ground volunteers. I know everyone is eager to get started. I will report further when we are getting to the point where we understand the new law. This is not an easy task. Last week I had a lengthy conversation with a staff person over just one section of the new law . As part of our effort, we will provide information explaining the rules for each person’s particular situation. We will create forms explaining the rules and hand-outs to give those we canvass. The new law will impact lots of people - recent estimates are up to 360,000 - but I believe that students will be the most impacted. We will work with our university and college students to make sure they can vote and have their vote counted. This is not obvious, since it involves not only the proper ID, but also many students aren’t aware that they must vote in the correct precinct or their vote will not be counted. I am confident that we can do it. Ellie
