Dear Friends, My birthday is coming up at the end of this month--November 30. For my birthday, I want to try to raise $10,000.00 to purchase vaccinations and medications for the homeless pets at the Southern Brazoria County Animal Shelter/SPCA of Brazoria County. As most of you know, I am the Director there, and every day I see so much need for these sweet animals who come into my care. In February of this year, blessed by two large donations, one from a Friend of the SPCA and one from Lake Jackson Doggie Dash, we began vaccinating all shelter pets immediately upon intake. Through this aggressive vaccination campaign, we have virtually eliminated the spread of parvovirus and distemper in the shelter. Living in such a close, closed environment, our shelter pets are very vulnerable to upper respiratory tract infections. However, I dont believe that sneezing should be a death sentence. Most upper respiratory infections are viral, but we treat them with antibiotics to avoid a secondary bacterial infection which can be fatal in a shelter environment. Vaccinations and antibiotics are expensive, and our shelter does not have sufficient funds to purchase the volume that we need to keep all of our shelter pets healthy. Almost half of the dogs who enter our shelter are heart worm positive, and most of the dogs and cats need parasite controlling medications. $10 will provide vaccinations and a heart worm test for one dog. $25 will provide formula to bottle feed a litter of kittens for two weeks. $50 will provide lifesaving antibiotics for shelter pets for one full week. $100 will provide a heart worm treatment for one small dog. $300 will provide a heart worm treatment for one large dog. $1000 will provide vaccinations and parasite control for all pets who enter our shelter for one week.
