Dear Friends and Colleagues, I am writing to let you know that as of tomorrow January 15, 2015 I will no longer carry the last name of Lisyanskiy and instead officially, formally and legally be known as John Waldman. It is not a sudden change, as some of you who know my family closer, probably can see the connection. I will be joining my family; my wife and kids in honoring and taking on the name of my father. See my dad grew up in a very turbulent time during the height of communism and anti-Semitism in the former Soviet Union in what is now known as Ukraine. In the mid-1970s he met his future wife (my mother) and at the same time tried to enlist into university but to no avail. During those years it was almost impossible for Jews to get into universities, get good education or a job if your name was Jewish or had an ending in “man”, so he took my mother’s last name. One day in 2003 my father realized that he no longer needed to hide or pretend and he decided to get his name back. Our entire family respected that decision and we went to court to legally change our names. My family changed all their documents, but I did not, because at the time I was getting deeply involved in community affairs and politics and was worried about the transition. So here I am over a decade later, with many experiences behind me, I am no longer worried about the transition and feel that it is important for me and for my family to go through with this change. We left USSR in 1992 because of systematic discrimination, prejudice and anti-Semitism. I am so fortunate and blessed with my family’s decision to immigrate to this amazing country which we love and appreciate so much. I am truly humbled and honored to share this news with you and look forward to continuing our relationships whether they are personal or professional for many years to come; except for my name, nothing shall change! Thank you! P.S. Oh yes and tomorrow January 15, 2015 is my father’s birthday! Happy Birthday Dad!
