Dear Friends and Community Members, Jenny Hein and I wanted to take an opportunity to thank you for your patience with our much overdue updates to what is transpiring in our county. We have had circumstances beyond our control mitigate updating sooner than now. As many of you know, we have a new Superintendant and a recently retired Food Services Director for LCPS. We had a very successful meeting with the Food Services (FS) staff last year at the Health/Wellness Committee meeting for the Board of Supervisors, outlining our objectives and felt that FS was very prepared for our presentation and appeared to be proactively interested in helping to make healthier changes to our childrens school menus. Since April we have tried, repeatedly, to reach out to our contacts at FS...many months later there is still a vacancy in the Food Services Director role and we have only received little information about what direction this department is interested in taking if at all. When Jenny and I reviewed the current 2014-2015 menu, it was apparent that none of what we had advocated for had changed. Obviously, this is very disappointing and not ideal, but we also have learned through these processes that food reform is quite complicated...there are USDA compliance issues/concerns that have to be met for example. We are fortunate that we have real kitchens in our schools unlike FCPS. Another complicating factor is the Smart Snack guidelines, which appear to not have been abundantly communicated to the PTOs or school administration, which will affect food that is offered during school hours, including fundraisers. RFFK is committed to serving as an educational resource to our children, community and to our county. We want to focus on the positives and reassure our supporters that we have the utmost faith that RFFK and the county can work collaboratively to support changes in our menus for our childrens health and wellbeing.
