Dear Friends and Family, In 2007, I began an amazing journey. My destination? Finding a cure for breast cancer. At that time, I walked in the Susan G. Koman 3-Day Walk to remember my dear friend, Barbara McClanaghan, and to honor the brave fight of another dear friend, Renee Tunison. My donors were in my thoughts every step of my life-changing 60-mile adventure, and the experience was so extraordinary that I am determined to do it again! Unfortunately, since that time, Renee lost her battle with breast cancer. I miss both Renee and Barbara every day. I want to walk again to remember the sunshine that Barbara and Renee brought into my life and into the lives of others. In addition, I have come to know many friends and family who are currently battling breast cancer or who took it on and won! So, I also want to walk to honor the courage of my aunt, Pattie Greene, and friends, Laura Mahler, Judy Schultheiss, and Amy Maurice. Finally, I want to walk for my daughters, my mom, my mother-in-law, my aunts, my grandmother, my sister, my sisters-in-law, my nieces, my girlfriends, my colleagues, my neighbors…I want to walk so that none them ever has to face the horrible disease. This year, I will be walking in the Susan G. Komen 2013 Michigan 3-Day event August 16—19, joining thousands of men and women committed to battle against breast cancer. I am asking you to donate because the battle continues. The statistics are alarming. Every 74 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer – a sobering statistic that I want to help change. I am sure each and every one of you knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer. The best way we can make a difference is to raise awareness –thousands of Komen 3-Day walkers nationwide bring attention to this cause - and to provide the monetary support necessary for research, education and treatment. That’s why I am reaching out to you. My goal this year is to raise $2300 for the fight against breast cancer. Your donation benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. I plan to dedicate Day 1 of my walk to remember Barbara and Renee and will create a shirt to wear with their names listed. If you would like to honor the memory of someone who lost his/her battle with breast cancer, I will be happy to include this name on my Day 1 shirt and will walk in tribute to your loved ones as well. Day 2 will be the day when I wear a shirt with the names of those brave survivors for whom I am grateful: Aunt Pattie, Laura, Judy, and Amy. If you have a name of a loved one who is currently battling breast cancer or has fought the battle and won, I will wear their names with pride. Finally, the last 20 miles on Day 3 will be dedicated to all of us who have not been personally afflicted with breast cancer. I would like my Day 3 shirt to be filled with names of people we love and hope never have to face this disease. Please let me know if you have names I can add to my t-shirts and remember to tell me if these loved ones are to be remembered, to be honored for their fight, or if they are ones we hope never have to fight themselves. I hope you will consider making a donation that will make a real difference and save lives! You can donate by following the link below to make an online donation in an amount that works for you. You can spread your credit card donation over four monthly payments, and your company may even offer to match your donation through their Matching Gifts program. I will not end my journey until I reach my destination – a world without breast cancer. With sincere gratitude for your support, Leah Barnett 2013 Michigan 3-Day the3day.org
