Dear Friends and Family I’m writing to let you know that I’ll be volunteering at Instituto Santa Clara, a bilingual high school in Juticalpa, Hondura owned by the Olancho Aid Foundation. I’m grateful that the foundation has invested in me (housing, health insurance, transportation, and a small monthly stipend) and entrusted me with a high school teaching position—literature and writing classes at that! The long and short of it is that each volunteer has been asked to raise at least $500.00. Please help make this journey possible with any contribution you can. As a benefactor of a vast and powerful nation—the United States—my conscience demands that I help correct the social and economic injustice suffered throughout Central America. It is not a burden borne of guilt, or the desire to experience a 3rd world country for its novelties. Instead, it is, I hope, that natural desire for a human being to enact, and not ignore, the contents of their conscience. Each year the Olancho Aid Foundation selects between 5 and 10 college graduates from North America to teach at their bilingual elementary and high school. Padre Ricardo Donahue, President and Founder of the Olancho Aid Foundation, believes that by educating children we can break the cycle of poverty that is so prevalent in Honduras.
