Dear Jamaicans (living in Jamaica), You are such bad tippers. - TopicsExpress

Dear Jamaicans (living in Jamaica), You are such bad tippers. And funny about it too! Whenever Im in Jamaica and patronize the local spots like, So So Seafood, Truck Stop, Glorias (over hyped), Morgans Harbor, and even the Barber, I use my standard 15%. So if my bill is JA$4000. Ill give JA$550 to the wait staff/server. Ive had friends tell me its too much! One friend observed me and said, Patrick, you leaving your change? lol. The Barber on East Queen Street (near Hanover St) looked at me funny, when I gave him JA$100!! The hair cut was only JA$500!! A hair cut in NY is $14. I recognize the economic dynamics. But I guess tipping is not a cultural norm. But these service workers are all minimum wage labor. The tips help them put food on the table. One worker explained, been paid $8000 per week at the time. After bus fare and car fares of $2000, lunch, and other expenses, she was left with only $5000. Its not affordability - its custom. Now when I visit, Ive reduce my percent to 10%, not to appear too extravagant?
