Dear Ladies, I greatly appreciate your input regarding my question about whether or not you are comfortable with someone other than your OB delivering you. Although I strive to deliver every mom/baby who is under my care, there are times that even I cannot deliver a patient. Sometimes its because the baby simply delivers to quickly, or I have signed out for a special event or when I am out of town. What I found through my survey is that most patients are OK with having someone other than their doctor deliver them because of the incredible amount of trust that they have in their OB planning for coverage for their delivery. Most patients understand that labor and delivery is unpredictable and, for that reason, patients are willing to give us a flexible schedule to work with and are accepting of other OBs to be there in our stead. However, if things are planned and a doctor does not show up, then patients understandably get upset that they doctor let them down. This is where we, as OBs, must do our best. Even though we cant be everywhere at all times, we should make it clear to our patients when we will not be on call, on vacation, a special event, etc...... We should give our patients an opportunity to meet the doctors that will be covering for us. We should also be willing to give our patients an accountability of our delivery record as well as those that cover for us. Thanks again for all your help. Sincerely, Dr. Julio Novoa
