Dear Ladies and Gentlemen: The article gave an excellent description of the history of the celebration of Christmas. But I must disagree that the highest and best examples of American Christmas holiday sentiment are the movie Its a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed and the two songs sung by Bing Crosby White Christmas (after which another Christmas movie was named) and Ill be Home for Christmas. I have listened to the old black and white Fred Waring Christmas television specials. I am well familiar with the Jimmy Stewart character George Bailey, the Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye movie, and the two Bing Crosby songs. Of course all these are nice enough. They are well intentioned. They are very popular among all Americans. But I think they are kind of brash. A little too cigarette-smoky. A little too scotch-and-soda-y. A little too bowling-alley-ish. A little too Meet Me in Saint Louie-like. Too Kate-Smith-y. Jesus was not a Doughboy. Jesus was not a Soda Jerk. Jesus didnt sell New England Life door-to-door. Jesus didnt wear a raccoon coat to Harvard football games. Jesus was not a wrestler in high school. I just feel junky when I watch White Christmas. Yes, thats it: junky and tacky. Of course, these are only my personal opinions. I do wish you all a Blessed Christmas, in Jesus Name. Very well, it is a good movie. But, still, I am not there. Let me say it this way. I prefer the 1952 television premiere of Giancarlo Menottis Amahl and the Night Visitors. You can watch that in full on YouTube. The spirit of that little operetta and the manner of its performance are wonderful, in my opinion.
