Dear Malcolm - I was thinking about you the other day and I - TopicsExpress

Dear Malcolm - I was thinking about you the other day and I visited you on FB only to see that you had passed away, and I cannot distinguish between grief that you are gone and guilt that you have been gone for months without my knowing. I wonder what happened? You were such a dear friend in elementary school - you opened my mind to new music, you always had a smile for me. I remember how you spent all of grade 7 shyly pulling your hair in front of your eyes, or the week you kept your hand on your right cheek to cover a pimple that embarrassed you, even when I told you it did not matter. I remember a day when I was very sad and we sang OLPs song Clumsy to each other over ICQ. You played the role of Grandfather in Cinderella - a part I had written with you in mind. You sent me a Reign of Frogs song that expanded my concept of music, and you gave me permission to love Metallica. I always felt accepted and acceptable in your presence, though we took a lot of bullying and BS (and seemed fated by the desk lottery to spend the entire year sitting together, which did not help the jokes). I spent months of our final year wishing I had feelings for you - whatever amateurish attempts at romantic love a barely-teen is capable of. Instead I had something better - a deep and lasting affection for a dear friend - in my experience a much better and lasting love affair. Thank you for being in my life...
