Dear Members and Friends of Goa Chitra, We are pleased to invite you for the inaugural of our new Museum -Goa Chakra and the Kachchh Ji Chaap exhibition on the eve of Goa Chitras 5th anniversary celebration on the 1st of November 2014 at 4:00 pm By Hon Chief Minister of Goa Shri Manohar Parrikar. It was five years ago that my wife and I made a commitment to collect, preserve and pay tribute to our unique heritage for posterity. Our Vision was to host other topic related museums and encourage crafts facilitation. Today we are at the threshold of a very significant milestone on this journey as we pay tribute to the rich heritage of the wheel with our new museum - Goa Chakra, a Museum of the wheel. Wheeled vehicles were an integral part of Indian history from its transportation history to war, hunting, and racing, two-wheeled farm carts, covered carriages, heavy two-wheeled freight wagons and passenger coaches. Over the years, I found the idea that many carts and carriages across India were being forgotten by banning of the Tonga in states and cities. Also banning out was a way of life for the gadulia lohars amongst the many other tribes and nomad which seem to become extinct. This museum has a larger historical significance and displays an impressive collection of around 70 non-mechanized indigenous carriages, carts and palanquins and many historically significant artifacts related to the wheel from across India. We shall also be launching the first of a series of exhibitions that supplement Indias rich crafts and traditions which are being revived in lines with our philosophy. These models shall be a source of inspirations to local craftsmen and is representative of the craft- rich and community-diverse regions in India. Local crafts can evolve and be sustained rather than become extinct. The Kachchh Ji Chaap exhibition: A curated exhibition organized by the print artisans of Kachchh and Khamir that narrates 500 Years of Block and Batik Print as it unfolded on the banks of the Indus to its modern multi-faceted practice. will be thrown open to public on the 1st of November 2014, at 4:00 pm. Khamir, a cultural platform for traditional creative practices and knowledge systems was born out of a collaboration between the Nehru Foundation for Development ( NFD ) and Kachchh Nav Nirman Abhiyan ( KNNA ). Sale of Khamir products: The products of Khamir that include 7 textile and 3-D crafts such as handloom weaving, Ajrakh hand block printing, leather craft, lacquer turned wood, metal bell, pottery and jewelry will be on sale and are reasonably priced for this occasion. Proceeds from these sales will go directly to these traditional communities. Live Performance: There will be a live performance of folk music by Khanubha Nanubha Jadeja from Kachchh, Gujarat. He belongs to Soorvani – Kutch Sangeet Sadhak Sangathan an informal organization of 305 musicians representing 38 different musical forms.
