Dear Minister, We are writing to express our concern about the conditions in Moroccan prisons, particularly the frequent use of torture and maltreatment, which Saharawi political prisoners suffer in prisons located in Western Sahara and in Morocco. We urge the Moroccan government to elaborate a plan to reform the current prison system, taking into account the following points: · The eradication of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment · Measures to avoid overcrowding · The separation of different categories of prisoners · Thorough investigations of cases of prisoners’ deaths and of complaints of maltreatment · Medical assistance and improved hygienic conditions · Support and protection of civil society organisations and lawyers who are working to defend the rights of prisoners We join Adala UK in asking the Moroccan government to commit to: · fulfilling its international obligations as a signatory of the UN Convention against Torture · to respect minimum UN standards with regards to the treatment of prisoners · and to respect UN principles for the protection of anyone in any form of imprisonment, according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Finally, we ask for the immediate and unconditional release of all Saharawi political prisoners who are imprisoned solely for expressing their political opinion. We look forward to hearing from you regarding any progress you make in the fight against torture and maltreatment in Moroccan prisons. Yours sincerely, Dr. Peter Farkas
