Dear Ms. MacDonald: Your email of February 17th, 2014 to the - TopicsExpress

Dear Ms. MacDonald: Your email of February 17th, 2014 to the Honourable Michel Samson, MLA Cape Breton-Richmond, concerning the Canso Causeway was forwarded to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for reply. The Canso Causeway is a vital link for Cape Breton and Nova Scotia and closures occur only when weather conditions or accidents compromise driver safety. At the request of our Minister, the Honourable Geoff MacLellan, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is now conducting a review of the situation which will analyze available options to better provide weather information, road conditions or closure information to motorists. Our goal is to ensure all users of this important link are kept informed. Some improvements have already been implemented. A wind monitoring system in now in place at the Causeway and advisory signing will be activated when high wind conditions exist. An emergency closure plan has been developed which is executed when weather conditions warrant a closure to protect driver safety. This plan was developed in cooperation with various community stakeholders including the RCMP, Fire Departments, EHS and the Emergency Management Office (EMO). Planning is also underway for other improvements which will be implemented in the near future. Thanks again for taking the time to write concerning this important matter. Please call me at 563-2250 if you require any further information. Sincerely, R. Gerard Jessome, P.Eng. District Director - Eastern cc. Honourable Geoff MacLellan, Minister Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Honourable Michel Samson, MLA Cape Breton-Richmond Tom O’Handley, Executive Assistant to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Paul LeFleche, Ph.D., P.Geo., Deputy Minister Bruce Fitzner, Chief Engineer Highway Programs
