Dear Parents: REGARDING AN EFFECTIVE METHODOLOGY FOR TEACHING - TopicsExpress

Dear Parents: REGARDING AN EFFECTIVE METHODOLOGY FOR TEACHING CHILDREN QURAN. Well, the methodology my mum followed and that I also adopted for my children and developed somewhat for my own children has been the following: 0-3 years: To recite the Fatihah and Ayatul Kursi and Juz Amma in their presence during the first 3 years. So that they are very familiar with these. 3 years +: Depending on your own childs readiness, I would begin getting them to recite and repeat and listen to the surahs of the 30th Juz (Juz Amma) so that they would memorise these surahs thoroughly between the age of 3 to about 7. Even when they have memorised the whole juz I would keep repeating it until it is thoroughly memorised. At the same time I would start using 1 or 2 very good Qaidahs to teach them the Arabic alphabet and mechanics of reading Arabic. I would spend even just 10 minutes a day every single day on this after breakfast. Some days when my child is not in the mood, we might go over something earlier, but would make the habit of doing it every single day. After completing two Qaidahs (for thoroughness as one may practise something better than another) we would move onto the Quran and being from the beginning to read, even if we only read ONE WORD a day in the beginning and then go over the ayah. This is a difficult stage and you can feel like it is taking far too long. Stay onto it and you will see that by about the 3rd or 4th page of Surah Baqarah, your child starts reading a bit more fluently. But theyve got to read something from the mus-haf every single day even if it is for just 10 minutes. Any weaknesses you identify can be explained again on a board or by going back to the Qaidah. If you stick to this course then by age 6 your child should complete reading the Quran from cover to cover insha Allah. This might be easier with the eldest child and may take longer with subsequent children just due to the fact you are juggling more. 7+ at some point after the age of 7 I would start seriously looking into a Hifdh teacher or Hifdh programme....then the next years slowly but surely and before your child starts his or her GCSEs by the permission of Allah they will have memorised the whole Quran. May Allah make it easy for all of us, increase our love for His Words and make our children and ourselves become Companions of the Quran. Ameen.
