Dear Paul, Great news - we did it! The science museums in Bradford, Manchester and York won’t be closing down! Culture minister Ed Vaizey has announced that he will decrease the proposed cut to the museums’ budget - and said that there was now “no question” of the museums closing. [1] This is a fantastic victory for the 45,000 38 Degrees members who signed petitions to protect the museums. Hugh Bayley, the MP for York Central, laid the credit firmly at the door of our people-powered campaign, saying: “All the campaigning and all the warnings sent to the government appear to have been heeded”. It’s amazing to think this all started with just three 38 Degrees members. It was Tom, Elizabeth and Chris who first stepped up to protect the museums in their home cities. They each started a petition on Campaigns by You, one for each of the museums. The petitions were focussed on the individual museums but, crucially, they presented a united front. They all sent the same message: don’t make this cut. Don’t force any of these museums to close. It’s because of this that not one but all three of the museums are now safe. When we work together, we can do incredible things. And often, all it takes is for one person to step up and take the lead, as Tom, Elizabeth and Chris did on each of their campaigns. If you haven’t come across it already, Campaigns by You is the new part of the 38 Degrees site where anyone can start and run campaigns on the issues that matter to them. We’ve helped save these wonderful museums for generations to come. Alex, Anna, Andrew and all the 38 Degrees team P.S. 38 Degrees is independent from political parties and big business. This means we’re entirely funded by individual donations from members of the public. It’s because of the 5000 people who donate regularly to 38 Degrees that we’ve been able to build Campaigns by You, hire more staff, and do more amazing things like this together. Can you help make sure we can campaign on more of the issues we all care about?
