Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Last year I shared at our Convention that suicide is a public health epidemic in Wyoming. We not only lead the nation in instances of suicide but our rate of suicide is among the highest in the world. Last year at convention I authorized a committee to address this epidemic, and at this year’s convention we will hear how our diocese can make a difference in offering hope for those who feel there is none. Furthermore, I am asking for your assistance in September. Many groups recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month and Sep. 10th as Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day, I am asking our diocese to join in this effort. Included with this letter are three resources that I ask you to incorporate into your services. These resources are: · Incorporate the prayer during the month with your Prayers of the People. It is my hope that this prayer will offer solace and comfort for those affected by suicide. · The Save the Date flyer is a resource that will help you identify tools that are available to our congregations in offering hope for those affected by suicide. · The insert bulletin is one to be used on both 9/7 and 9/14. We are called by our Lord to serve those on the margins and those affected by suicide are part of this group. Our churches can be a resource for them as we, through Christ, offer love, acceptance, and hope. Please join me in taking these steps towards changing the attitudes around suicide this September. In Christ’s service, The Rt. Rev. John S. Smylie Bishop of Wyoming
