Dear White People... : I understand that sometimes when we talk about RACE, it makes you feel guilty. Not because you are white but because you are safe. But dont think of that feeling as guilt, think of it as grief...It was never your fault. You did not know. The truth was kept from you. You were born with privileges that you didnt ask for. Just like we were born into thinking you are superior. We are alike somehow. We are all unaware. Grieve for us. Grieve with us. Grieve that we have been suffering under your nose all along and you were never taught that we didnt use to be like this until you came. Grieve history and how not equitable society is. South Africa is not what it is supposed to be. Its not your fault though...Who would say NO to special treatment? You are only HEIRS of stolen privileges. You inherited advantages along with your skin pigment. We are not angry. We are broken. We have to start from scratch. You on the other hand, you just keep inheriting and inheriting. So allow us to complain. Allow us to be angry. Allow us to talk about race. Sure, it is uncomfortable for you but discomfort is what compels us to change. In your grief, be comforted. You are in a great position to use your SAFETY and your privilege and your power to change society. Dontlet the discomfort of guilt keep your from empathy. Let your grief at unjustice inspire you to listen and learn and challege our current reality until we can ALL live in safety...
