Dear Zane, Id appreciate it if my name is left out. I have a 19yr-old son whom Ive raised on my own. Heres my problem. I live in a room big enough for one person. I just lost my job so Im barely getting by. He is a very intelligent young man but Im at my wits end! I have tried to get him to go to Jobcore, the military or just get his GED! He wont do any of it. He always has an excuse as to why he wont do it... Ive even gone as for as to tell him if he got a job we could afford to get a place together! His response was if I get a job I can get my own place. Right now its cold out and I dont want him sleeping on the streets but he is selfish and takes stuff from me without asking or replacing it. I just feel used and dont know what else to do! Please help me. Any and all advise its welcome! MY RESPONSE: You would never forgive yourself if you put your son out in this weather and something happens to him. But you need to put some fear in him. Tell him that he has until March 1st to start contributing or he has to leave. Stop giving him ANY money that does not pertain to him eating but you purchase his food. You are going to have to force him to be a man. If he indeed believes that he can get his own place as soon as he gets a job, let him prove it. Tell him that he has until that deadline to either get a job and help out, or get a job and leave out. Good luck.
