Dear all -- As usual we have two sessions this week at the Bristol County Sports Club. These are: On Monday 26th (7pm): we have our latest Monday Club session, the central feature of which will be one or more Tric Trac Tournos, where you play a single game against each other player in your group, and the scoring system rewards gammons and backgammons more than is usually the case. The player with the most points come the end is the winner. The competition contributes to the Spring Grand Prix, which encompasses all of our Monday sessions between the start of the year and the end of April. You basically have three options on the evening: (1) Side step the tournament, and get some one to one attention from an experienced player; (2) Enter the tournament, paying the £5 entry, and get grand prix points as well as the chance of a cash prize; or (3) Enter the tournament free of charge, get the experience of competing, but without the possibility of grand prix points or a cash prize. But remember to be there by 7.15pm (or ring or text me on 07940 284652 to let me know you are coming), because thats when we decide who does what. And on Thursday 29th (7pm): its the first of the years six Handicap Trophy tournaments. Entry is just £5, and you will get at least two matches, because those who lose their opening match go into the consolation flight. Unlike in many of our knock-outs, all matches in both flights are to 7 points. Each player is allotted a handicap. The top players are on 0, and others are on 1, 2 or 3, depending on their track records. Also new players get a handicap of 4, although the Director has the discretion to adjust this where there is an obvious anomaly. So if you are given a handicap of 4, and you get drawn to play one of our top players, you will start that match 4-0 ahead! These handicap tournaments are a great leveller, as they are intended to be, and represent a much greater than usual opportunity for inexperienced players to defeat experienced ones. There is also an optional £5 side pool, where the pool entrant(s) who progress(es) furthest in the competition wins/shares the pool. All tournament entrants will gain 1 Brunel Trophy qualifying point. Be there by 7.15pm (or ring or text me on 07940 284652 to let me know you are coming), because thats when the draw will be made. While the event mentioned above forms the central feature of the session, please also remember that playing league matches alongside the tournament is actively encouraged. The more players we have at the club on backgammon nights, the merrier. Everybody is welcome at all our sessions, whether to compete, to play some friendly matches, or just to find out what were all about. The aim is to foster a friendly group environment, because there is a social side to backgammon in Bristol that is important to many of us. See you at a session soon, I hope.
