Dear all, I revisited northern of Syria again in August 2013. It - TopicsExpress

Dear all, I revisited northern of Syria again in August 2013. It is a hotbed of ethnically and politically motivated conflict and war. The two main opponents are the Kurdish militia YPG and the radical Islamist groups from al-Nusra and ISIL. The clashes intensified drastically during the past few weeks, including the employment of suicide bombers and the beheading of opponents by al-Nusra. Moreover the Kurds started to train and arm young women as well so as to have enough man-women-power available for the defense of small villages and important buildings. Also caught in the middle of the Syrian war are the Syriac Christians - one of the oldest branches and "ethnic" communities in the Middle East. Some of the members of the community are still loyal to the Assad regime, though the Syriac Union Party is opposed to the regime as well as to the Islamists. They now fear that their heritage will get wiped out in the near future. All this fighting is in the end also about the control of oil/gas and the bread basket of the North.
