Dear all Jummah mubbarik Ive been asked numerous times to comment on the Tragic and wicked cases of child grooming in Rotherham Let me at the outset point out that this is a case of wicked criminality which any human being irrespective of their belief system must condemn outright without any reservations The second point is that these barbaric acts of grooming were carried out by young men of Pakistani origin My task today is to try to move the debate in a direction that leads to; (A) Realisation within the Pakistani community that this is a serious problem (which has not gone away just because a report has been published) (B)How can we ALL be agents of positive change that is proving so difficult to materialise despite the awareness of disfunctionalities? The conflict between Islam and its opponents can be traced back to the point when the Prophet(puh) received his first revelation. ...Iqra That conflict continues in one form or another today Some of the issues and challenges facing muslims in UK may relate to this aspect However Certain other challenges are direct result of our own making Like it or not we are seen by the others as muslims But What exactly does it mean to be a Muslim especially for the youth? Who and How do we ensure that this label of Islamic identity is nourished, nurtured and taught so its fit for purpose? Are we as parents equipped with knowledge and expertise to deliver the parenting responsibilities of bringing into society good muslims? If we are not Where does that responsibility lie? Masajids and madaaris? State Education system? Or Combination of all of the above? Its very easy for society to blame the young for our woes BUT Blaming others or waiting for knights in shining armour to bring us deliverance will only make the situation worst I think we must travel this journey through self reflection Have I done my own SWOT (strengths Weaknesses, Opportunities and threats) analysis as a Muslim Once we have defined our map of needs to arrive at our badge of a good muslim we may begin a journey of learning to reach our individual goals If these goals of learning can not be attained individually Then We must together create or reform to re engineer existing institutions to deliver our needs You must agree that we have reached a point of Paralysis by analysis We surely know what we need to do? Please let us together with sincerity of purpose move to the next stages of ACTIONS; PRIORITIES OF ACTIONS ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(at an individual level and institutional kevel) RESOURCING OUR AGREED ACTION PROJECTS FOR THE LONG TERM SYSTEM OF EVALUATION THOUGH ROBUST ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY warm regards
