Dear all, The DPIR Graduate Film Society would like to invite all - TopicsExpress

Dear all, The DPIR Graduate Film Society would like to invite all the Students and Faculty members of the Department to next week’s screening of ‘Coriolanus’ (UK, 2011), which will take place on Thursday 13th February 2014 (Week 4), at 7.00 pm in the Lecture Theatre, Manor Road Building. Drinks from 6.45pm. ‘Coriolanus’ (UK, 2011) Directed by Ralph Fiennes. Screenplay: John Logan, adapted from William Shakespeare’s original text. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain. Ralph Fiennes’s directorial debut is a searing modern re-imagining of William Shakespeare’s 1605 tragedy. Filmed in Belgrade, Serbia, the work has an uncomfortable visual resonance with the tragedies of global conflicts past and present. Caius Martius Coriolanus (Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General, is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanuss anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Butler) to take his revenge on the city. You can view the trailer here: youtube/watch?v=bsYrGIQnmxo The film will be introduced by Dr Elizabeth Frazer, our new Head of Department, is a University Lecturer in Politics, and an Official Fellow of New College. She is currently working on a project titled ‘Shakespeare and the Political Way’ - a study of the theme of political virtue as envisioned in Shakespeare’s dramas, with a special focus on ‘Coriolanus’. The DPIR Graduate Film Society’s events are a wonderful opportunity to hear prominent academics speak about excellent films, which provide a cultural insight into global political issues, as well as the chance to meet your fellow students and faculty members in an informal, yet intellectually stimulating setting. Those of you who attended our successful launch event in Week 7, Michaelmas 2013, during which Dr Karma Nabulsi introduced ‘The Battle of Algiers’ (1966), will already be familiar with our format. A cheese and wine reception precedes the screening, and a Faculty member presents a film of their choosing, which corresponds in some way with their wider academic work. An informal discussion follows the screening, and the cinephile stalwarts are welcome to continue debates at the King’s Arms. Please join our Facebook Group to stay abreast of all future developments: https://facebook/groups/dpir.filmsoc If you have any queries about the Society, you would like to get involved, or you have suggestions for future speakers, please contact Myro Halushka ([email protected]). We hope to see you next Thursday! With best wishes, Myro Halushka Convenor, DPIR Graduate Film Society MPhil International Relations, St Antony’s College
