Dear all, recently many of us attended the Canonization Mass of Popes Saints John XXIII and John Paul II BUT due to the number of pilgrims, tens and thousands did not received Holy Communion. The questions here: 1) Does that mean we did not fulfill the Sunday obligation even though the Sunday mass was observed prayerfully and reverently in St. Peters Square (in the absence of receiving the Sacred Host and/or Blood? 2) (This question is relevant to my group) At the following weekend, we attended Mass in Spain. We understood the Order of Mass but never understood what the priest has preached in the Basilica. We decided not to receive Holy Communion but attended the whole mass. What does Holy Mother Church says in this case? Have we fulfilled our Sunday obligations for the past two weeks or is Sacrament of Confession needed in this case? I hope an ordained priest, deacon or a lay person could point us to the right direction. NOTE: Please quote from the Cathechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) or any relevant Church documents to assist. Thank you.
