Dear colleagues and Representatives, We have before us a monumental task. Yet this is also our greatest hour! Along with having the capacity to turn the climate ship we also have the need and the will to turn the whole fleet associated with climate change. Those ships are aging and decrepit, many are taking on water and sinking even before they reach the cliffs of destiny that the Flat Earth society has set course for us. By this I mean the recalcitrant ideas and forces at play which would attempt to maintain the status quo even at the peril of life on this planet. Now you ask what are the opportunities here? First and foremost is to realize you have the will of humanity with you. Our needs are great, Transportation, food, livable villages and cities, participative democracies empowered by holistic education , the kind that has people rolling up their sleeves and learning to do the tasks required to build much more meaningful lives in reinventing how we approach living together on this planet.I am sure you can envision full creative employment in people working with the earth to empower her to heal this biosphere in only the way She can when healthy. We are talking about cleaning the toxins from our waterways, the soil and the air. Massive projects the like that Dr. John Todd (John Todd Ecological Design of Woods Hole, Mass) has championed for decades. We need to change the 19th century design model of doing business around the automobile to one of building heathy people and earth friendly living systems that transform the ways we live and interact as people. Ways that visionaries like Buckminster Fuller had foretold we could and should decades ago. Do you realize in one project alone with bioremediation in redesnging the Louisiana Gulf Delta alone using Permacultural design principles we could create massive change and full employment for the region practically overnight! Obviously there is too much to share in this short letter. Yet these things you know in your heart to be true. The naysayers who think they have a vested interest in maintaining this sinking ship and would kill off the very foundations of our existence must be made to realize there is far better ways of doing business. As you stay up all night on March 10th, I will be standing with you and echoing your call to address the climate crisis and protect our communities. We have an obligation to future generations to fight climate change and invest in a clean energy future.
