Dear country men and women, the bombings yesterday in Abuja and Adamawa has, once again, brought a very important question before us . IS NIGERIA AT WAR? Well, the government of Nigeria is yet to declare a full war against the terrorist groups and terrorism going on as required by law. However, since English is the official language in Nigeria, we decided to look at some dictionary definition of the word WAR just so that we know where we are, and maybe summon the courage to question those that have been constitutionally empowered to protect us. Remember, somebody took an oath to defend the constitution and provide safety and security for our citizens and properties. So, when can we really say that there is WAR? What does the word WAR mean? Let us quickly look at some definitions this morning. WIKIPEDIA War is an organized and often prolonged conflict that is carried out by states or non-state actors. It is generally characterized by extreme violence, social disruption and economic destruction. War should be understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities, and therefore is defined as a form of political violence or intervention. The set of techniques used by a group to carry out war is known as warfare. An absence of war is usually called peace. DICTIONARY.COM A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation; warfare, as by land, sea, or air. STANFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY A War should be understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities. Thus, fisticuffs between individual persons do not count as a war, nor does a gang fight, nor does a feud on the order of the Hatfields versus the McCoys (You may use OPC- Vs Egbesu as example here ). War is a phenomenon which occurs only between political communities, defined as those entities which either are states or intend to become states (in order to allow for civil war). MERRIAM WEBSTER An organized effort by a government or other large organization to stop or defeat something that is viewed as dangerous or bad. OXFORD DICTIONARY A state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country. Going by the given definitions above, would you agree that Nigeria is at war or wait till the war actually gets to your house like some of citizens living in Abuja?
